Beckett: Poetry – No. 2215; Have Mercy On Me, O God

Based on Psalm 57:1-6.

Have mercy on me, O my God,
for You alone are my refuge.
In Your shadow I take shelter
until the end of the deluge.
I cry out to my God Most High,
whose purpose for me is huge.

He will come from Heaven to save, —
to put to shame the devil’s plan.
God’s steadfast love and faithfulness
is coming with the Son of Man!
It’s as though lions surround me,
but God is exalted o’er man!

The evil foe set a sly trap
and my spirit became forlorn.
He dug a pit for me to fall,
but in Christ I have been reborn.
He falls into the pit himself
and I wake with joy in the morn.
