Beckett: Poetry – No. 2180, God is My Helper

This limerick is based on Psalm 54.

O God, save me by Your name!
Vindicate me from my blame!
     O God, hear my prayer
     according to Your care.
Give ear as I cry out my shame!

For strangers rise against me;
they seek my ruin ruthlessly.
     They do not want You in their lives;
     they only care about spreading lies.
Save me with Your righteous glee!

Behold, God is my Helper!
He is my life's upholder!
     I give thanks to You with a poem,
     for Your grace is never wearisome.
For in Him I am a victor!
