Beckett: Poetry – No. 1817, Creation’s Unceasing Testimony

This poem is based on Psalm 19:2-6.

Each day gushes forth speech, —
     and every night lectures, —
of the God we fearlessly preach, —
     He whom all creation pictures.

Not a single creature refrains a word
     from speaking about their Creator.
He is sung about by every bird;
     the sun is His commentator.

He causes each to rise in the morning
     with the joy of a bridegroom
over his wife adoring
     with a love in full bloom.

Its testimony is as sure as the dawn;
     the day’s praise can never cease
as the sun heats up your lawn
     with the bristling of the leaves.
