Beckett: Poetry – No. 1730, Christ betwixt Two Thieves

Christ Between the Two Thieves,” 1635, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640).

His skin glows pale with innocence,
contrasted betwixt the two thieves
sunken in the darkness of their sin
as He gives His final breath.

He looks upwards to His Father, —
the gaze of His mother Mary follows, —
His innocence to fall upon the guilt
of those who would look up to Him.
