Beckett: Poetry – No. 1667, Second Article of the Creed

I believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only Son, my Lord.
I am under His jurisdiction;
I vow to obey His voice.

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary.
Though born under the Law,
He was not born into sin.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, —
crucified, died, and buried for me.
He suffered God’s wrath for me
and died the death I deserve.

He descended into Hell,
proclaiming His victory
over Satan, Death, and my enemies, —
His death the final sacrifice for all.

The third day He rose from the dead, —
vindicated by God the Father, —
the resurrection He promises to me
by faith and my Baptism.

He ascended into Heaven and sits
at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
From thence He exercises all authority
and prepares a place for me.

From thence He will come
to judge the living and the dead.
For His sake I shall inherit the kingdom;
those who hated Him will suffer Hell.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
has redeemed my soul, —
He paid the price for my freedom
with His own precious blood.

With this purchase, therefore,
I now belong to Him, —
He owns my very soul,
safe and secure in Him.
