The Christian’s Highest Work

Luke 2:17, When [the shepherds] saw [the baby], they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.

The shepherds did not remain silent. They saw the promise fulfilled in the infant Jesus, and now they had to tell others. For they first heard the Good News, then they saw it. What else does one do with good news than proclaim it? When we see and hear good news, we cannot help ourselves but proclaim. Thus, out of all the good works we seek, the proclamation of the Gospel is our highest work, not as if the doing of the proclamation gives us salvation, but it is the highest work we can do for our neighbour. For in our proclamation, we risk our lives, wealth, and honour, for when the world hears our proclamation, our enemy and their friend the Devil cannot tolerate it.
