Beckett: Poetry – No. 2173; Mary, Did You Know?

Mary, did you know that your blesséd song
would humble even clergy?
Mary, did you know that your Magnificat
would be in the church’s liturgy?

Did you know that your humble song
would comfort suffering Christians?
Did you know that your beauteous song
would be studied by theologians?

Did you sing to your Child
this precious lullaby
because you knew that on the cross
you would see your Baby cry?

Your Son was born into this world
to save you and me from death.
Did you think back to His first cry
when He cried out His last breath?

You gave birth to the King of kings
with a crown of jewels not adorned.
You saw that your anointed Son
was crowned with many thorns.

What tears of joy you must have shed
when you saw your Son rise from the grave.
Did you know that today we’d sing your song
to praise Him who came to eternally save?
