Beckett: Poetry – No. 2160, A Slave to God

Inspired by Romans 6:15-23.

Everyone is a slave to something, —
to drugs, sexual immorality, anger,
sports, false gods, politics, yourself, —
everyone is a slave to sin.

I am glad to be a slave to God,
for to be His slave is to be free, —
free from all sin’s entrapments
and free to be truly human in Christ.

To be God’s slave still means limits,
but that’s what it means to be human.
For the Limitless One bound Himself to Death for me,
but Death could not bind Him for long.

Thus, He broke the chains of Death
and purchased me from my taskmaster.
Now, therefore, I am a slave to life
to live in freedom forevermore.
