Beckett: Poetry – No. 2129, Where Progressivism Leads

As our intelligence increases,
our morality steadily declines.
We sacrifice our souls
to the god of intellect
for the sake of new discoveries.

We are content with losing our humanity
on the road of what we call “progress.”
Yet on this road, we become lost in who we are
that we’ve completely lost ourselves
to various, amorphous delusions of identity.

We feed the beast of our existential delusions,
distracting it with corrupt morality
until its unsatisfied hunger finally consumes us, —
me, myself, and I falling into the digestive,
sulphuric acids of Hades our ravenous beast.
