Beckett: First and Last, Beginning and End

Isaiah 44:6-7, Thus says Yahweh, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Yahweh of hosts: “I am the first and the last; besides Me there is no god. Who is like Me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before Me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen.”

Who is like our God? No one. God always was, is, and will be. God is the first and He is the last, thus He and Jesus are one, as Christ is also the Alpha and the Omega (Revelation 22:13). Yet somehow, we fool ourselves into thinking we can be gods of our own lives. We even think we know all things, or that we can ascend to such knowledge. Yet what we know is smaller than a drop in the ocean.

God, as the first and the last, knows all things, and this is for our great comfort. Especially for all who are in Christ. All who abide in Him have their beginning and end in Christ (John 15:1-6). Those who abide in Christ go where He goes—specifically our glorious end in the new creation. We may not know a whole lot in this vast universe, but one thing we can know for certain is our end and beginning in our God, the first and last of all things.
