Beckett: Poetry – No. 1892, God’s Mercy Not Withheld

This exegetical poem is based on Psalm 40:11-17.

O God, You withhold not Your mercy, —
Your faithfulness preserves me!
     For evil is surrounding,
     and my sins overtaking.

May it please You to deliver me!
O Lord, make haste for mercy!
     Let my enemies face their blame
     and the dishonour of their shame!

Yet for all those who seek You,
let them joy and grace accrue.
     May we who love Your salvation
     praise You without cessation!

I am but a worm in constant need,
but You, O Lord, You think of me.
     In You I have mercy and deliverance;
     You are my hope’s assurance.
