Beckett: Poetry – No. 1865, The Lord’s Omnipotence

This exegetical poem is based on Psalm 33:10-17.

The Lord brings the collapse of nations;
He disrupts their operations.
     The Lord Himself remains forever;
     grace is His heart’s endeavour.

Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh, —
those who are His chosen display.
     He blesses the generations
     who make Him their foundation.

He looks down from His heavenly throne
and upon our lowly homes,
     all of whom He has shaped and formed
     and sees all deeds performed.

The soldier owes victory to the Lord;
no ruler determines the end of war.
     Salvation comes only from the King,
     never from man’s own planning.
