Beckett: Poetry – No. 1865, The Lord’s Omnipotence

This exegetical poem is based on Psalm 33:10-17.

The Lord brings the collapse of nations;
He disrupts their operations.
ย  ย  ย The Lord Himself remains forever;
ย  ย  ย grace is His heart’s endeavour.

Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh, โ€”
those who are His chosen display.
ย  ย  ย He blesses the generations
ย  ย  ย who make Him their foundation.

He looks down from His heavenly throne
and upon our lowly homes,
ย  ย  ย all of whom He has shaped and formed
ย  ย  ย and sees all deeds performed.

The soldier owes victory to the Lord;
no ruler determines the end of war.
ย  ย  ย Salvation comes only from the King,
ย  ย  ย never from man’s own planning.
