Beckett: Poetry – No. 1689, You Are My Shield

A limerick based on Psalm 3.

O God, many are my foes
who count all my woes.
They say You don't exist,
but my faith shan't desist.
Against You, who can oppose?

You, O God, are my shield;
my soul You have healed.
I call out to God,
and He answers my call;
my life He has sealed.

I lie down and sleep;
my life the Lord keeps.
Each day He grants I wake
even when my spirit aches,
my soul for joy to leap.

Salvation comes from God alone;
in Christ He is made known.
Give Your people Your blessing,
Your love always repressing
my sins Christ has atoned.
