Beckett: Poetry – No. 1688, God Reigns

A limerick based on Psalm 2, a Messianic psalm.

Against God the nations rage,
which they do in every age.
"From God let us separate,"
Satan's lies they imitate,
themselves paying sin's wage.

God in Heaven begins to laugh,
for they shall be blown like chaff.
He has set His King in Zion;
from Judah He is the Lion
to rule on our behalf.

He has power to save and destroy;
His wrath He delays to deploy.
Therefore, O rulers, be wise.
Submit to God, I advise,
lest His judgement He employs.
