Beckett: Poetry – No. 1668, Third Article of the Creed

I believe in the Holy Spirit, —
He who makes Christ vivid.
He is the Lord and Giver of life,
who provides comfort in strife;
His breath has no limit.

I believe in the holy catholic church,
upon whom Christ is perched, —
the universality of all Christians
and Christ’s own decision
for His sheep whom to search.

I believe in the forgiveness of sins, —
God’s favour always within
the life and death of Christ,
who paid the final price
for salvation for me to win.

I believe in the resurrection of the body, —
the Spirit in me to always embody
God’s promise to raise me from the dead
and take away this life’s every dread;
thus, I have no reason to be haughty.

I believe in the life everlasting,
God’s grace for me always casting
the certainty of eternal life, —
the Church to be Christ’s wife, —
joyous praise forever blasting.
