Beckett: Poetry – No. 1654, The First Commandment

“You shall have no other gods.”
I shall fear, love, and trust
     in God above all odds.

I do not have the final say,
     no matter what my lust,
for there are no other gods.

When things seem grey,
     rely on God I must,
     no matter the odds.

To God I shall pray, —
my soul to Him I entrust,
for there are no other gods.

I pray sin be held at bay,
     lest I turn to dust,
     for God beats all odds.

No matter what they say,
     God is always just,
for He reigns over all gods
     and defies all the odds.
