The Word is Our Lamp

2 Peter 1:19, And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

We’re in the dark and we need a lamp until the morning star rises. We’re in the darkness of sin and the world and we need the Word as our lamp until the morning star, Christ, arrives. As the psalmist wrote, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105).

God’s Word shows us the way we should go; it is clear and obvious. In our own stupidity, we go a way in which it does not light and bless: infidelity, homosexuality, transgenderism, murder, gluttony in all its forms, greed, and so on. The Word is our lamp to walk in the world’s darkness and survive its seduction until Christ the morning star rises to burn those walking in darkness and to bring us into His marvellous light.
