Christ’s Authority

Hebrews 1:3, [Christ] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…

Our confessional creed—the Nicene Creed—essentially follows the format of this scripture. Let’s compare them:

Hebrews: [Christ] is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature…”
Nicene: Begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.”

Hebrews: He upholds the universe by the word of His power.”
Nicene: “…through whom all things were made.”

Hebrews: “After making purification for sins…”
Nicene: “For us human beings and for our salvation He came down from the heavens… He was crucified for us…”

Hebrews: “He sat down at the right hand of the Mighty on high…”
Nicene: “…and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

Understand, therefore, the explication of the text: Jesus Christ is God in the flesh in the real, literal sense. He is God who created the universe, and He is God who made purification for our sins on the cross. This is why we can fully trust in Christ, for it is with God’s full authority that He not only created all things (John 1:1, 14) and sustains the whole universe, but it is also with God’s full authority that He purified our sins by His blood and resurrection, who now sits with God the Father in His heavenly kingdom, who will bring His new kingdom down to us.
