Aliens in this World

Revelation 3:21, “The one who conquers, I will grant him to sit with Me on My throne.”

Thus, how is it granted to us that we conquer? Through our own works and arduous efforts? By no means! Paul asks a series of rhetorical questions: Since God is for us, who can oppose us? Since God gave His Son’s life for us, how will He not also give us all things? Who can judge God’s chosen since it is God who justifies us? Who, then, can condemn us, since Christ is interceding for us? Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Can tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, poverty, danger, or murder (Romans 8:31-35)? Paul answers with a resounding, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors THROUGH Him who loved us” (v. 37). By what means are we more than conquerors? By our works and efforts? No! Christ is the means by which we conquer. And so our very souls rely totally on Christ alone.

As Christians—as God’s chosen people—earth is not our home, but an inn we rent out until the Lord is finished preparing our home (John 14:3). The world searches desperately for alien life; we have been here all along! As God’s chosen people, we are aliens in this world; we do not belong here. Therefore, we suffer, but we “rejoice in our sufferings” because our “suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame.” Why? “Because God’s love has been poured into our hearts THROUGH the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Romans 5:3-5). How do we become more than conquerors? God has poured His love into us by means of His Son and the Holy Spirit whom He has given to us; and it is through the love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that gives us the capacity to endure our suffering, which builds our strength of character to continue hoping (i.e. trusting) in He who will not put our hope—our faith—to shame. For faith is the key. So long as we have faith, we will conquer sin, the world, death, and the Devil through Christ; and Christ will make us lords with Him, calling His aliens back home.
