Revelation 18:4, “Come out of her, My people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues.”
Here, we hear God’s command to His people—the Church, not unbelievers—to flee from the Great Whore (cf. Revelation 17). Most English translations translate it, “the great prostitute.” It is a kind and generous translation. No, she is πόρνη (pórnē)—a whore, a harlot—and μεγάλης (megálēs)—the great one. Who is this Great Whore? False religion—those multiple religions that deceive many with their lustful attractions and thus defile many. She even attracts members of the Lord’s Church! Those believers who are deceived by reincarnation and karma, those new age pagans deceived by the prosperity gospel, those modern Gnostics deceived by gnostic claims of Christ’s work and person, and many other Christians who embrace pluralism in the name of “tolerance” and cultural relativism.
God commands us to forsake this Great Whore and her bounteous lustful charms lest we partake in her sins and become infected with her godless plagues. Her adulterer—the world—demands tolerance of her sins and thus conceives bastardised offspring of Christianity; but God commands intolerance, for to tolerate her is to tolerate sin and the destruction of her victims. Therefore, we admonish one another in our sins and must indefatigably proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Thus, how do we come out of her? By faith in Christ. Christ alone is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Let us always cling to Him alone. We the Church are the Bride of Christ (Revelation 19:7-9; 21:2, 9). Let us, therefore, by the grace of God not commit adultery with the Great Whore and her many harlots. For when we are faithless, God remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13).
