Poetry: No. 2443, The Promised Prophet

A poem on Deuteronomy 18:15-19.

Moses gathered Israel round
to teach the Law on Moab’s ground.
Then he spoke something easy to Miss,
which concerns God’s ancient Promise:

“A Prophet like me God will raise
from amidst your kin to show the Way.
You asked at Horeb’s fiery sight,
‘Let us not face such fearsome Light.’

“The Lord then Vowed, ‘Another shall rise, —
a Prophet like you, great and wise.
I shall put My Words in His mouth,
and He shall speak them absent Doubt.

” ‘Whoever Rejects what I give Him to say,
he will answer for it on Judgement Day.'”
This Prophet is Christ, our Priest and King, —
our God and Lord to whom we sing.
