No. 2364, The Waiting Lamps (Poetry)

A poem on Matthew 25:1-13.

Ten virgins took their Lamps in hand
to meet the Bridegroom as they planned.
Five Wise had Oilโ€”their Flames would keep, โ€”
while five were Foolish, careless, cheap.

The Bridegroom lingered on His way,
and all grew tired as night took Day.
Then came a cry, “Behold, He’s near!”
They woke and lit their Lamps with cheer.

The Foolish saw their Flames grow Low;
they begged, “Your Oil, please let us borrow!”
“Not so,” the Wise replied with care.
“Go buy your own; we’ve none to spare.”

While they were gone to find their store,
the Bridegroom passed through Heaven’s door.
The Wise went in to join the Feast,
and Joy within their hearts increased.

The others came and knocked in Vain.
“Lord, open to us!” they exclaimed.
But He replied, “You I don’t know.
You missed the Hour; please leave and go.”

So watch, for you can’t know the Time;
the Call may come with bells or chime.
Be readyโ€”keep your Lantern bright,
and guard your Soul through darkest Night.
