Beckett: Poetry – No. 2257, God the Redeemer

A villanelle on the 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed.

According to God’s will alone,
He saved me for one simple fact:
That I may be His own.

Thus, I believe in Christ alone
whose death was His redemptive act
according to God’s will alone.

From death He purchased my soul and bones
to be faithful to His covenant’s pact
that I may be His own.

His purchase caused the devil to groan,
for his evil kingdom was sieged and sacked
according to God’s will alone.

On the cross Christ hung to mockeries prone
with my sins on His naked back
that I may be His own.

For all my sins Christ atoned,
His blood God’s new contract
according to God’s will alone,
that I may be His own.
