Beckett: Poetry – No. 2248, Loving My Parents

A villanelle on the 4th Commandment

I love my father and mother
by obeying and cherishing them all the more
and serving them with honour.

I do not lead them to anger
or live under their roof as a bum, for
I love my father and mother.

Neither will I be a spoiled bother
but obey when it’s time for chores
and serving them with honour.

I shall not scheme with sister or brother
but remember to bring to the fore:
I love my father and mother.

I also obey officer, pastor, and teacher
with respect and godly décor,
and serving them with honour.

God gives all these to protect with ardour
in both times of peace and war.
I love my father and mother,
and serving them with honour.
