Beckett: Poetry – No. 2240, The Art of Loneliness

The art of loneliness is a canvas of self-loathing.
You become a beggar rapacious for love.
Instead, hear the Word of the Lord composing.

It is easy to look at yourself supposing
you must yourself gain God’s favour above.
The art of loneliness is a canvas of self-loathing.

For with yourself you are engrossing
an idol in the image of true love.
Instead, hear the Word of the Lord composing.

You make repugnance your only clothing
and can’t even bring yourself to self-love.
The art of loneliness is a canvas of self-loathing.

One who experiences joy overflowing
stops and listens to the Dove:
Instead, hear the Word of the Lord composing.

When self-deprecation is exposing, —
your misery you cannot dispose of, —
the art of loneliness is a canvas of self-loathing.
Instead, hear the Word of the Lord composing.
