Pro-choice Christians will satanically utilise the Scriptures to justify abortion (= the wilful killing of an unborn human being). As false teachers are always keen on doing, they ignore both the immediate and wider contexts of Scripture. One of these wider cases is Exodus 21:22-25, “‘When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be find, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.'”
First, if a man strikes a pregnant woman that forces her child to come out, but the baby is not harmed, the man is only fined to pay whatever the judges deem just. But if he assaults her so that the unborn baby is harmed, then his payment is whatever extent of harm is put on the baby. If he strikes a pregnant woman so that the baby loses its life, then he is to lose his life too. Abortion is not only an assault on the baby; it is also an assault on the woman’s body. In OT Israel, whatever the baby loses, the man also loses, even if it’s life.
In the phrase “life for life,” we also see the ancient acknowledgement of life in the womb (rather than “a blob of cells”). But what if the perpetrator is the baby’s own mother? The same thing applies, for God’s Law knows no distinction. (Perhaps why mothers are not specifically mentioned in this law is because the idea of a mother murdering her unborn baby was completely unheard of at the time, which goes to show the increasing insanity and moral depredation of our culture and society.)
Consider how unborn babies are aborted today. With certain surgical tools (or weapons, rather), the baby’s head is crushed, torn off, and the rest of its body is also literally torn limb from limb. If this part of God’s Law still applied to us today, every abortionist and every mother who consented to the murder of her own unborn baby would also have to be torn limb from limb. They claim the baby was not a human life yet sell its body parts to the highest bidder for medical research. I have no words to describe such an evil cognitive dissonance.
But thanks be to God for Christ, who came down from heaven as an incarnate baby and grew as a man—the promised Messiah, the Son of God—who died for the sins of the whole world (John 3:16). Yes, these sins include abortion. Let us, then, pray for post-abortive mothers. Let us pray that they would not only realise their sin but even more come to Christ to be forgiven. As the famous hymn goes, “Amazing grace / How sweet the sound / That saved a wretch like me.” God’s grace is amazing because it knows no limits; He saves wretches like murderers, abortionists, prostitutes, addicts, thieves, liars, hypocrites, and so forth. All of us are sinful, murderous wretches before God, and we all hear the same sweet sound of His amazing grace: “I forgive you.”
