Beckett: Poetry – No. 1728, The Blind Leading the Blind

The Blind Leading the Blind, 1568, by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-1569), based on Matthew 15:14.
Eyes pale like winter landscapes,
heads held aloft to make use
of their smell and hearing,
walking sticks feeling around,

their path leads away
from the church in the foreground;
and as the lead man falls into a pit,
the next follows in after him.

The others who follow will soon
suffer the same fate,
for when the blind lead the blind,
they leave Christ in the foreground.
