Beckett: Poetry – No. 1657, The Third Commandment

Keep the Sabbath day holy, —
     do not despise hearing His Word;
     live out His Word boldly.

From His Word we gladly learn
     His will that our flesh blurs,
     for He has made us holy.

To hear His Word we should always yearn
     especially when sin we incur,
     and to obey His Word boldly.

His grace we can never earn, —
     on this day He freely confers
     the Spirit to make us holy.

This day do not spurn,
     lest His mercy you defer
     and profane this day boldly.

For the Sabbath your heart should burn,
     and for the Gospel to be heard,
     for He has made us holy
     to come before Him boldly.
